The true stress s is plotted against true plastic strain o in Fig. 1. An arrow in the figure indicates the strain around which the strain hardening is almost saturated and the local necking starts. Before that, the deforma- tion is macroscopically uniform, being accompanied by modest strain hardening. It is seen that uniform deformation continues up to a large true strain o1.25 that corresponds to a nominal strain on250%. Since a phenomenon of local necking is still unknown, the present attention will be paid only to the uniform deformation prior to the necking, hereafter. Connecting to this, it is found that the total nominal strain to fracture is larger when the uniform elongation attained prior to local necking is larger [4].
