Globally, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects approximately 180 million people (Mohd Hanafiah et al., 2013), with three million new infections occurring annually. HCV-infected individuals are at risk for chronic liver disease including cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (Alter, 2007). HCV is a positive-polarity, single-stranded RNA Hepacivirus belonging to the family Flaviviridae ( Lemon et al., 2007). HCV RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) lacks proof-reading mechanisms which result in high error rates during replication ( Moradpour et al., 2007).
