Twenty 3.5 · 1.5 m plots were used for field
evaluation. The plots were ploughed well, all weeds
removed, soil leveled, and nitrogen fertilizer (urea
46%) was added at the rate of 357 kg ha1 at two
doses, one half was incorporated into the top 15 cm of
the dry soil, while the second was added thirty days
after transplanting. Phosphorous (15% P2O5, superphosphate)
was added at the rate of 238 kg ha1 into
the top 15 cm of the dry soil. A 30-day-old seedlings
(Giza 177) naturally infected with brown spot were
transplanted at a spacing of 20 · 20 cm. Spore
suspensions of T. harzianum were sprayed at rates of
104, 106 , and 108 spore ml1 four times at 15 day
intervals, beginning 30 days after transplanting. Four
plots were used for each treatment. Four other plots
were sprayed with the chemical fungicide Hinosan at
the recommended dose (952 ml ha1) as a positive
control. Another four plots were sprayed with plain
water to serve as a negative control. All plants were
sprayed until run-off occurred. The Randomized
Complete Block design was used to set out the plots.
