The PMPRB operates as an independent, quasi-judicial body, empowered to enforce sanctions and impose price reductions for patented pharmaceutical products. The Board consists of no more than five members, appointed by the governor-in-council, including a chairperson and a vice-chairperson. The chairperson is designated under the Patent Act as the Chief Executive Officer of the PMPRB with the authority and responsibility to supervise and direct its work. At present, there are four appointed Board members, who operate on a part time basis.
