Work-Study Programs in High School
Many high school in the United States have work-study-programs, In their last year of high school, some students have a job for part of the day as one of their classes. Some of these students make money and some don’t but all of them learn important things about having a job and being a good worker. Many people think that when students learn outside of the classroom in a real job, they prepare for life after high school. Work-study programs can really help students get a job or get into college.
There are many types of work-study programs. Most of the students work in offices, but not all of them do. Some students fix cars, and others work outside with environmental engineers. Big businesses, like computer companies and banks, often work with high schools to create work-study opportunities for students as well.
Raul Gomcz usually goes to school from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but this year hr works for a magazine from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. He says. “I learn important things in my work-study program. I must be at work on time. And if I miss a day. they don’t pay me!” At work, he reads stories and fixes spelling and grammar mistakes. He says, “At work, I use what I learn in my English class. And now I think that someday, I might want to write for a magazine or a newspaper.”
Annie Miller work for an engineer in her work-study program. They design and help make bridges. roads, and buildings. She says, “It’s great! I love learning math in school, but at work. I use algebra and geometry in the real world!”
Not all high schools ofter work-study programs. But most of the schools that have them think they are a big success.
