Information provided could focus on the areas that make the most difference in successful outcomes. In my own experience, I’ve found that moving nonproductive discussions offline can make a major difference in group effectiveness and climate. Members generally resent having to listen to other people argue about issues that are of no concern to the overall group. Asking the individuals involved to either apply their comments to what is being discussed by the group, or to please delay the discussion until later, has worked well for me and for others in my classes and workshops. One woman claimed that this one action made more difference in her facilitation than anything else she did. Mentioning brief ground rules and/or the use of a Parking Lot before a meeting starts, can provide a framework that keeps off-track issues under control.
