Bird (1963) came up with three phases of port evolution from initial development at the port site to the subsequent expansion from simple terminal facilities for warehousing and wholesaling to more advance facilities. Hoyle (1988), on the other hand, came up with five phases of physical development of the port city as illustrated in Table 1. It started with close spatial and functional association between the city and port (medieval age to 19th Century) in stage one to large scale modern port which consumes large areas of land and water space (1990s) in stage five.
