A diverse but balanced sample of participants was targeted using a matrix based
on gender, age (70-80 / 80+), marital status, tenure status, personal mobility
(able / unable to walk 400 yards), self-rated quality of life and population
density of area of residence. For each double-sided demographic, roughly 50% of
the participants were selected from each arm or category. Forty of the
participants lived in England and two lived in Scotland. The mean age of the
participants was 79.1 years (range=72-92). Twenty-four women and 18 men
were interviewed.
