9.Sukhothai era's famous Buddha images (cont.) Phra Achana is translated to "He who is not frightened" r (this Buddha image's name is known from "Wat Si Chum's stone inscription"). The right hand of the image is covered with gold leaf, put on there by Buddhists who come to pay their respect to the Buddha. The image was restored by the Thai Fine Arts Department in the 1950s. Phra Achana is also known as "Phra Pood Dai which translates to "the speaking Buddha". During King Naresuan's range (in 2nd half of 16th century) many wars were fought with the Burmese. According to legend at one time before a battle the King wanted to boost the morale of his troops. He ordered one of his soldiers to secretly climb the narrow stairway in the mondop enshrining the Buddha image and delivered a cheering spe to the soldiers troops. The acoustics of the small space and the fact that the speaker could not be seen made the believe it was the image of the Buddha speaking to them.
