Protocol
Baseline values were established for each participant
1 h before the marathon run. Maximal inspiratory and maximal expiratory pressure, peak inspiratory and expiratory flow, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and maximal handgrip strength were assessed at baseline, and again at the end of the run (within 20 min) and 4 h and 24 h after the run. During exercise, breathing and leg effort were measured using the Borg 6–20 scale. Participants were asked to rate their breathing effort at a separate time to rating leg effort, with 10 min separating each rating. Dyspnoea and leg effort measurements were made at 30-min intervals throughout the exercise. Heart rate was recorded throughout the marathon run using a telemetry system
