In addition, Teshima
and Kanazawa (1971) reported that within the
ovaries of the crab, Protunus triberculatus, progesterone
was converted into three other steroid
compounds, one of which was testosterone.
Although crustaceans may not possess the
steroid hormones characteristic of vertebrates,
they seem at least partially capable of converting
exogenous supplied steroid hormones to
other forms that can bind to appropriate receptors
and elicit an effect.
