Total aboveground biomass and leaf area index (LAI) were mea-sured at jointing stage, heading time and maturity. Plants from fivehills from each plot were sampled from the third row in order tominimize border effect. All plant samples were separated into greenleaf blades, stems (culms + sheaths), and panicles (at heading timeand maturity). Dry matter of each component was determined afterdrying at 70◦C to constant weight and weighed. The amount ofnon-structural carbohydrate (NSC) in the stem (culm + sheath) wasdetermined at heading time and maturity according to the methoddescribed by Yoshida et al. (1976).
