In George‟s report, three varieties of safflower Th-10 black, NP-9 black and Partial hull black were selected for tissue culture experiment. Cotyledon explants of the three varieties didn‟t show any response on MS basal medium (Murashige and Skoog‟s basal medium). However, rooting was observed from hypocotyl explants of NP-9 black. Addition of 0.2 mg/L BA (benzyladenine) to the MS basal medium induced the shoot bud regeneration from cotyledon explants of Th-10 black and NP-9 black. Shoot buds originated within two weeks and usually 3-4 buds developed per explants followed slightly callusing at the cut end. The percentage of cultures producing shoot buds and the buds number of per explant produced increased with the level of BA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L) in MS medium. On an average 8-10 buds developed from one explant in 65%-70% of the cultures.
