During the short duration of the study, a reduction in
blood cholesterol was observed for all cows; however, in
cows fed fenugreek seeds the reduction in blood cholesterol
concentrations (11%; Fig. 1a) was greater than that observed
in cows fed C-TMR (7%; Fig. 1a). Average milk cholesterol
concentrations as mg g–1 lipid tended (P = 0.06) to be
decreased by 22% (Fig. 1b), resulting in a 15% reduction in
milk cholesterol content as mg dL–1 (P = 0.14) (Fig. 1c).
Dietary fenugreek seeds increased the concentration of most
of the functional fatty acids in the milk (Table 1).
Hypocholesterolaemic effect of dietary fenugreek has been
observed (in human, and rats) and reviewed previously
(Petit et al. 1993; Al-Habori and Raman 1998), but not in
ruminants. The present findings strongly indicate that feeding
fenugreek seeds to dairy cows successfully reduces milk
cholesterol content through reduction in blood cholesterol
