Hyman Bass (University of
Michigan) worked with Deborah
Ball, an education researcher,
to investigate mathematical
knowledge needed for
teaching elementary
school. Studying
videotape, student work,
and a teacher’s notebook
from an entire year in a
third-grade classroom, he
has learned to talk with
teachers, mathematics
educators, and policy
makers about the resulting
mathematical ideas. In his effort
to understand elementary school
teaching, he has apprenticed as an
instructor for courses on teaching
mathematics in elementary school.
