Medically supervised prenatal care is critical for ensuring the development of a healthy baby. Arrangements for such care should be made as soon as a women suspects that she is pregnant. During the initial visit to a health care provider, pregnancy can be confirmed (or refuted), and any medical problems the mother have can be evaluated and treated. Counseling on practices that influence fetal development will also be provided. For example, mother may be encouraged to participate in a program of regular noncontact exercise. (As long as there are no complications, regular exercise can improve weight control, circulation, muscle tone, and elimination, and is believed to contribute to an easier labor and delivery.)
