The resistant strain, MRSA which was first discovered in the UK in 1961, now is widespread, particularly in the hospital setting. MRSA may also be known as oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA) and multiple-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Despite this, MRSA generally remained an uncommon finding even in hospital settings until the 1990's when there was an explosion in MRSA prevalence in hospitals (Johnson et al., 2004).
