Leaves of mulberry (Morus alba, L.) have been one of the prominent herbs widely used by traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Results of several recent intervention studies in both animals and humans suggested that the consumption of mulberry leaf extract could lower the risk of type 2 diabetes via inhibition of alpha-glucosidase enzymes, suggesting that mulberry leaf extract could benefit treatment and prevention of diabetes. In addition, mulberry leaf extract has also been shown to affect the body via other mechanisms of action, including increasing insulin sensitivity and toning beta cell function.
