Three Biggest Differences and Three Biggest Similarities between Thailand and the U.S.

According to the saying of John F. Kennedy “If we cannot end our differences at least we can make the world safe for diversity,” the world has already adopted his notion. Being in another country is a wonderful moment in people’s life to learn about the concept of similarities and differences of each country. During my pre- academic program at university of Oregon, Eugene, USA, I have noticed many similarities and differences compared to my country in Thailand. The list of those is vast, but I want to highlight only three areas in differences and similarities I found really interesting, which are; people, ways of life, and urban characteristics.
Differences
To begin with the attitude of time of the people, the major differences between Americans and Thais are; how many hours in a day- “24 or 25” they have, and how they response to the time. Johannes Fabian (1983) indicates that time is a constitutive dimension of social reality. Yet, it seems to me that time waits for no one here in the U.S. Americans have 24 hours a day and they enjoy planning their schedules and taking action. They are always on time and rarely waste their time doing other fancy stuffs. On the contrary, in Thailand, time in Thailand could be “24 or 25” hours a day. For example, public transportations in Eugene such as, buses have been operated by schedule and always arrive on time whereas in Thailand, you rarely know what time your bus will arrive at the bus stop. As a result, when Thai people make an appointment they always schedule the meeting time 10- 15 minutes intervals. Because of this unpredictable system in Thailand, Thai people seem to have 25 hours a day. In other word, the concept of time is much more uncontrollable and flexible than in the U.S.
Another main difference about way of life I have noticed is the U.S.’s endeavor as a “Creator” in Education. Most schools and colleges provide students and people with many education- related choices and a lot of valuable information for them to learn in all knowledge- based areas, especially in the area of sustainability. In Thailand, students are finished with secondary school when they complete the 12th grade. Universities are always a must to choose for them except working. There are totally less resources available to the “Follower”- students, teachers and schools. For example, Eugene has many diverse initiative programs both formal and informal for students and people in learning, training and contributing to environmental efforts. In addition, there are many public indoor and outdoor activities for people in all ages to participate with in the university. These education efforts address in a lot of employment opportunities in green jobs, ecologically sound environment, and finally leadership and sustainability.
The last area in my opinion that helps explain the difference of urban characteristics between the U.S. and Thailand is its urban pattern. The downtown of Eugene divided up into grids, which are identified by numbering and name system, such as E- 12th Ave, W-29th Ave, and Willamette St. etc. This kind of “visible- block” zoning helps government to plan, design and make decisions regarding the appropriate scale and location of certain categories of use, such as business, industry and housing etc. Obviously, in Thailand, due to the lack of urban planning, “Bazaar” community happened everywhere, specifically, in Bangkok- the capital city of Thailand. The building types, uses and public space in Thailand are mixed in size and zoning depending on the size of the population of the area where the business is located. For example, a rising building of convenience store named “7-11” can be seen on every corner scenes of street or Soi, in Thailand. In addition, people prefer staying in their shop- houses in downtown or in the housing project near the shopping mall in the inner city to commuting to other areas around the city, which is happened in the same pattern across country.
Similarities
In general, people between the East and the West may be different by a scale, physical appearances and way of life. However, I think that those factors are not important because it is a common concern that people living in different environment should be not only different in the opinions but also be different in their behave in daily life. Among all differences, the “Pride of Freedom” quality of American people and Thai people are the most important similar matter in that all of the differences do not play a crucial part in this Humphrey atmosphere. Obviously, on last independence day- the 4th of July 2012, the day that all American celebrated their freedom and showed pride for their country. Having participated in some activities on that day, I could feel that it must have been the same feeling of Thai people being proud of their nation for never being colonized when they hear national anthem at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Thailand.
Besides the “Pride of Freedom”, one particular similarity of people’s way of life between Americans and Thais I found is “BIG MAC and Padthai” phenomena, in other word, the risk of people’s health from globalization effect. America is the land of Hamburger whereas Thailand is the land of Padthai. According to the globalization, I can easily have Padthai for my lunch at the flea market in downtown, Eugene. Similarly, in Thailand it is common for people to order BIC MAC delivery for lunch in the office. Some statistics shows that, at present McDonalds has expanded their shops not least than 30,000 sites across the world and, even a little, so does Padthai. As being seen in the effect of “BIG MAC and Padthai”, it is believe that globalization may influence social change and health risk. World Health Organization indicated that uncontrolled urbanization around the world and the high demand imported products have strong effect on local habits and health problem rates. Therefore, in my opinion, the change in mindset of people in America and Thailand toward the “BIG MAC and Padthai” may accelerate the risk in its people’s health.
From my observation, the last similarity of urban characteristics that caught my attention is people common attitude related to water. Like Thais, in Eugene, Americans spend their free time along the riverbanks of the Willamette River and they usually have a picnic in a park or garden space on the sunny day. The riverfront trails are “opened” to everyone and are accessible for pedestrians and cycling. People love to go out walking, jogging and biking. Similarly, Thai people usually build their house along the river, as it is part of their life. Each house has its own walkway accessing to the river at the back of the house. Thus, there are some waterfront areas, like other “opened” space along Willamette River but smaller and disconnected. Each area is unique among residential houses because of its joint public-private ownership and is served as a community space. Thai residents used these public spaces for their community activities, especially, for neighborhood transportation corridors for crossing the river or travelling somewhere nearby. Yet, the use of “opened” areas as a river living- related environment presents the relationship of life in Thais and Americans towards water.
Having in a place where the international cultures clash, I have found that it is important to be well prepared before having a new exciting “swing” life. Being in Eugene, OR for two months, I found that the U.S. and Thailand have three biggest differences and similarities in people, way of life and urban characteristics. These three areas would not be hard to adjust when you arrive if you were good in managing your thought. Closer to the truth, all differences and similarities are what make each country unique and interesting to explore and they must go hand in hand and linked.
