How to Install Photo controls
Installing photo controls for exterior lighting is usually simple. The unit can be inserted anywhere in the lighting power circuit. If the wiring is accessible, installation may take only a few minutes. Some exterior fixtures have standardized receptacles for photo controls. Keep the photo control out of precipitation and direct sunlight, unless it is designed specifically for exposed locations. If necessary, make a small hood for the unit.
A unit that is properly selected and installed may last for the life of the facility. Keep the sensor from seeing direct sunlight, as this shortens sensor life. At the same time, install the sensor so that it sees enough daylight to keep the lights turned off during cloudy days. Typical units can be set to remain off until the light level falls to about one foot candle(about ten lux). The setting may drift from the effects of aging and from dirt on the sensor window.
