Although CSR projects are now standard business practice for most companies, this was not
the case when the cosmetics company The Body Shop started in the United Kingdom in 1976.
however, from the very beginning, founder Anita Roddick believed that her business had to be about
public goods and social responsibility. This remained important even as her business grew to
become a large multi-national company and continued even after Roddick sold the company to a
much larger business. As the Body Shop’s website explains, “We believe business is about more than
just the exchange of products and a money. It is about an exchange in experience, community
action, and knowledge, too.” The Body Shop maintains what it describes as a robust plan of CSR
centered on the ideas of supporting community trade, defending human rights, and protecting the
planet
