Strategies for Getting to Know a Child’s Family
Teacher: “Does anyone have something special to tell us about his or her family?
Xavier: “Me! Me! Me!”
Teacher: “Xavier would like to tell us something about his family.?
Xavier: “Maria got losted and she was all dirty and Mommy said she gots to stay outside.”
Teacher (sounding incredulous): “Maria had to stay outside?”
Xavier: “Yes, but then she meowed real loud and Mommy let her in.”
Teacher: “Oh, Maria is your cat, not your sister!”
Xavier: is confused. If he knows Maria is a cat, why doesn’t his teacher know that, too?
