Car bomb warning Yala
Southern intelligence officials have warned security personnel to remain on full alert for possible car bombs in Yala following a string of arson and bomb attacks in the strife-torn southern province this week.
An intelligence unit based in the South reported that a coordinated series of arson and bomb attacks in Yala city and other districts on Thursday night and Friday might have been the work of the RKK separatist group whose members are active throughout the province.
The unit believed that insurgent leader Isamael Rayalong, also known as Ustaz Soh ("Ustaz" is an Islamic religious teacher), might have masterminded the attacks to wreak havoc in the province.
It said it had information that insurgents had already turned five vehicles, mostly pickup trucks, into car bombs to prepare for more attacks in Yala municipality.
On Thursday night, insurgents staffed a string of attacks in several areas in Yala. Car tyres were burned on roads in Bannang Sata, Raman and Muang Yala districts at about 7.30 pm. A utility pole and road signs were also set on fire. Shortly afterward, several bombs went off in Muang Yala district. They damaged two utility poles and snapped another in half.
At least eight explosions were also reported in Yaha, Raman, Than To and Bannang Sata districts. Most of the attacks targeted power poles in an apparent attempt to cause blackouts, police said.
On Friday morning, two bombs exploded in Muang and Than To districts, injuring three policemen and two soldiers.
