Sitting in an office chair for long periods of time can cause lower back pain and can worsen problems that already exist. There are a number of factors that affect back pain in the office, including level of movement, schedule, and desk set-up. Posture is a key factor that can cause pain over time; this includes sitting in the same position for too long, leaning too close to the screen, or tensing up because of stress. Also, many workers lack training in how to use their desk chair, display screen equipment (DSE), and other workstation accessories. It’s estimated that businesses in the UK lose 4.9 billion days a year because of work-related back pain, a loss of approximately £5 billion a year. That’s got to be a reason for employers and employees to sit up and pay attention to the simple ways that back pain can be prevented and treated in the workplace.
