Systems with high water loss
levels during the summer months must not, however, be under valued, when considering CW systems in arid and semi-arid areas
of the Mediterranean. In these regions, where the preservation of
water is a specific aim and where, traditionally, the amount of
water available in the reservoirs is low in the summer due to lack of
rainfall, the treatment of wastewater using constructed wetlands is
an innovative approach which could guarantee continuity for
irrigation, even with large water losses. In these systems, the use of
macrophytes with high WUE values could minimize water loss and
ensure greater water availability at the outflow
