Helminth infection are believed to induce an immune response which is distinct from that produced in response to other chronic pathogens (e.g. protozoa, viruses and bacteria) in that chronic helminth infections and coinfections are characterized by a Th2 immune response in which various Th2 inflammatory markers such as eosinophilia and increased serum IgE levels are prominent. In this study, we observed increased production of Th2 cytokines by PBLs stimulated with parasite antigen from helminth-infected children, which was more evident with increasing number of helminth parasite infections. These data thus support the large body of literature showing that helminth infections induce Th2-type immune responses
