OW TO USE THE MEDICATIONS
You should be someplace comfortable and private where you can relax, and where there is a bathroom nearby. Ask a friend to stay with you during the process. You should be able to reach a hospital within a few minutes in case of an urgent complication. Avoid drinking alcohol or eating heavy meals on the day you do the medical abortion, but otherwise you can eat and drink as you like.
You will need 1 tablet of 200 mg of Mifepristone and 10 tablets of 200 mcg of Misoprostol each. In case you only have 8 tablets of Misoprostol you can not do the 6 th step (the abortion will still work in most cases).
Follow these steps:
1 st – You should swallow the 1 tablet of Mifepristone
2 nd –between 24 and 48 hours after taking Mifepristone put 2 pills of Misoprostol (200 mcg) under your tongue and keep the tablets there for at least 30 minutes. You can swallow your saliva. After 30 minutes you can swallow any remains of the tablets.
3 rd - 3 hours later again put 2 pills of Misoprostol (200 mcg) under your tongue and keep the tablets there for at least 30 minutes.
4 th - 3 hours later put 2 pills of Misoprostol (200 mcg) under your tongue and keep the tablets there for at least 30 minutes.
5 th - 3 hours later put 2 pills of Misoprostol (200 mcg) under your tongue and keep the tablets there for at least 30 minutes.
6 th - 3 hours later put 2 pills of Misoprostol (200 mcg) under your tongue and keep the tablets there for at least 30 minutes.
It is important to use the next doses of misoprostol even if you are already bleeding and think the abortion already occurred. These doses will help make sure the process is complete and make it less likely that you will need any sort of madical attention.
WHAT TO EXPECT
After taking the mifepristone, most women do not notice any effect. Some women can experience a bit of dizziness and there can be some vaginal bleeding.
Bleeding and cramping usually starts within 4 hours after taking the first tablets of the second medicine misoprostol.
The abortion process itself can cause cramping, pain and bleeding that is stronger than a normal menstruation. The further you are in the pregnancy, the stronger the pain and bleeding will be.
Women can also have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and chills as normal effects of the misoprostol.
You will lose a lot of tissue and blood, but also a fetus (the size depends on the duration of the pregnancy). Usually it takes 10–15 hours before the fetus comes out, but it can take more or less time. It can be quite distressing to see the fetus. However, women are also relieved, because they know the pregnancy is ended. Please make a plan about how you will dispose of the products of the pregnancy.
At 13 weeks the fetus measures up to 8 cm. After 15 weeks, the process will be very similar to a delivery. In these cases it is advisable to go to the hospital when the water brakes. The doctors won’t be able to stop the abortion anymore, and you can say you think you are having a miscarriage. At 20 weeks the fetus measures about 25cm and 320 g. If the first day of your last menstruation was more than 20 weeks ago, the medicines can induce the birth of a breathing baby. Therefore you should never do a medical abortion after 20 weeks.
After the fetus the placenta should also come out by itself (usually within an hour) do not pull the cord! The woman goes through an experience like labour and experiencing this can be very painful and traumatic.
As the abortion completes, the cramps and the bleeding will gradually diminish.
It is normal for the bleeding to get lighter and to slowly diminish over a period of 1-4 weeks, or even longer. The first menstruation should come 4-6 weeks after the abortion, though it can take even longer.
You should use menstrual pads, do not use tampons.
