A major aspect of maintenance management is the optimisation of the inspection,
maintenance and replacement decisions [14]. These depends on the availability of good
quality and timely data, captured by the various computerised systems in the supplier, user
and service- provider organisations. The volume of data available to maintenance managers
is expanding rapidly. The problem is exacerbated in the case of organisations with operations
covering large geographical areas, such as public utilities, mining and transportation. Thus the
potential of digital technologies offers new options to deal with the resulting vat amount of
