Findings
The identified units of meaning were summarized into two
main themes: “The loss of a mother” and “dealing with genetic
cancer risk.” The first theme, “the loss of a mother,” runs
throughout the interviews as a fundamental topic. The second
theme, “dealing with genetic risk,” is closely related to the first
theme in that it is related to the participants’ respective experiences
of losing their mothers. This theme also stresses the importance
of close relationships and genetic counseling as vital aspects
for dealing with genetic cancer risk.
