The species belongs to Passifloraceae family and widely distributed in tropical & sub-tropical regions (Crochemore et al., 2003). It originated from tropical America and is comprised of about 530 species, and about 40 species in Asia, Australia and the South Pacific and one in Madagascar.
Passion fruit is round to oval shape, with a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The two types of this fruit are purple passion fruit and yellow passion fruit, which differ in appearance but taste the same. The bright yellow variety of passion fruit (Golden Passion fruit), can grow up to the size of a grapefruit, has a smooth, glossy, light and airy rind. On the other hand, the dark purple is smaller than a lemon (Pinoyentre, 2010).
