Integrating all functional blocks in a chip including image
enhancement blocks is the general trends among leading
DTV SoC product providers. They claim that single chip
approach can get better cost structure, which is the most
critical factor in the market due to single package, shared
external memory, etc. Having all functional blocks in a chip
can also reduce the system development burden of DTV
manufacturers. However, two-chip approach has some
advantage in optimizing each chip for the corresponding
functional block. It seems analogous to PC system design
where the CPU covers all the new functional features
required while graphics processor only addresses good
graphical performance. Two-chip solution can offer
flexibility to DTV manufacturers where they can choose the
most appropriate chip solutions for each block, to quickly
adapt to various market needs.
