The second antecedent to health coaching was the
presence of a health coach with some level of training
and a desire to help. Most often, this was a health
professional; however, a few studies reported the
health coach as a peer. Further, multiple studies did
not identify the professional affiliation of the health
coach. Among those articles that did specify a professional
background, nursing was the most commonly
studied discipline in the health coach role. In addition,
some studies reported that health coaches had
received specialty training, such as MI or coaching
certification. Finally, a desire to help within the health
coach was also noted as an antecedent in the literature
(Biswas-Diener, 2009; Davison & Gasiorowski, 2006;
Price, 2009).
