Flate Plate Photobioreactors (FPPs), built according to Molina-Grima et al. (1999) and Sierra et al. (2008), have been incorporated in the Biorefinery (Fig. 4) to achieve high biomass productivities of oleaginous microalgae and to provide an inoculum for establishing massive cultures in High Rate Oxidation Ponds (HROPs). A combination of reactors has been already successfully applied for commercial-scale cultivation of Haematoccocus pluvialis ( Huntley and Redalje, 2007) and for the cultivation of Nannochloropsis sp. for lipid production ( Rodolfi et al., 2009).
