In this action research study of my classroom of seventh grade mathematics,
I investigated project-based lessons. These lessons differed from previous lessons I
had taught that were more like direct instruction where I would give the students
the information and they would then use that information to complete problems
that used what I had just taught. Overall, I discovered students liked math class
more after the use of project-based lessons. However, I also learned that projectbased
lessons were time consuming for the teacher to create, and did not show any
improvement in achievement. I found that on a personal level, I enjoyed teaching
more because of the projects, as seeing the students enjoy working on them was
rewarding.
