This review is divided into five sections: (1) the
need for soil sustainability indicators and their
desirable characteristics, (2) the underlying assumptions
made as a precursor to soil macrofauna
research, (3) the trends and gaps in current
research focus, (4) future directions in soil macrofauna
research and (5) the nature of the research
required to appreciate fully the value of soil
macrofauna as soil health indicators to monitor
the soil resource. In the last three sections I will
discuss the responses to the questionnaire.
