Difficulties in gaining public support for CCS in projects in Europe, as shown by the cancellation of the Barendrecht Project in the Netherlands and demonstration projects in Germany, have been in part a product of environmental, political and social issues that have less play for a North American audience; the economic viability of projects, in lieu of carbon legislation, is a more likely reason for project cancellation in North America (as witnessed with recent cancellation of the Pioneer Project in Alberta). While the knowledge gained from these EU project challenges has been instructive for identifying issues and potential flash points for communications planning on the other side of the Atlantic, the comparative lack of social controversy in some North American projects begs an examination of what, exactly, is different in the planning and activities that take place in Canada and the United States.
