Weed Detection
When utilizing multi-spectral imagery, don't assume that green is always good and red is bad; look for zones and patterns that are anomalies. In the corresponding NDVI image, patches of the field appear dark green. If we bring a yield map mentality to this image, we might assume that these are extremely healthy spots. However, upon ground truthing, these green spots were found to be dense patches of weeds. If left untreated, this area of the field would have appeared red in our end-of-the-season yield maps from yield loss due to weed stress.
This is a prime example of how remote sensing aids crop scouting. Aerial imagery pin points zones that need immediate attention or that may be missed as maturing plants make scouting efforts more difficult.
