Gases and propellants
Executive summary
Gases and propellants are rare cause of dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is more common than allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in this regard. Chemical lacrimators (tear gases) have as their method of action direct irritants effects on the skin and mucous membranes. Rare ACD to these agents can occur. Ethylene oxide, a potent sterilizing agent, has caused frequent outbreaks of ICD from exposure to inadequately ventifated hospital garments and equipment.
