The pace of rule revision has been accelerating since the International Conference on the Principles and Future Direction of AACR was held in 1997.8 Current members of the Joint Steering Committee are dedicated to expediting the rule revision process. The Joint Steering Committee has become much more proactive in soliciting proposals, and has the support of its sponsor, the Committee of Principals of AACR, in pursuing efforts to speed up the process. They are now committed to a process of regular and rapid rule revision. The Joint Steering Committee is proceeding on a number of fronts, including: short-term revision to keep the rules relevant (e.g., revising Chapters 3, 9, and 12); making the rules more user-friendly (e.g., appendix on major changes, an expanded introduction, possible reorganization of Part I); and, exploration of a number of more fundamental issues (e.g., the format variation question, the content versus carrier issue). The Joint Steering Committee has begun a program of work, with deadlines, for ensuring that they keep on track, and they are now planning an annual cycle of revisions. AACR2’s publishers have agreed to make it a loose-leaf publication. The 2002 publication incorporates revised Chapters 3 and 12 (a new Chapter 9 was issued with other revisions in a package in late 2001). Then, it will subsequently be updated annually with insert pages. The goal is to make AACR2 itself a fully operational integrating resource.
