Given that veterinarians are already a highly regarded‘informal’ source of farm management information,2,3 members of our profession should be well positioned to take on a more formal (and properly remunerated) role in information transfer.Veterinarians are obviously highly trained and skilled in advising on animal health, but this is not necessarily the same as animal production, and certainly only one component of overall farm productivity and profitability.While this much broader knowledge base is required for effective one-on-one farm consultancy and running farm discussion groups, it is not necessarily required to be a good facilitator of extension and information transfer events,whatever form they may take.The core skills and resources required for success at this type of facilitation include:
