Bond yields move up as taper talk persists
By Jamie Chisholm, Global Markets Commentator
Monday 08:30 BST. Borrowing costs are moving higher, leaving stocks struggling to recover recent losses, as the prospect of less Federal Reserve stimulus continues to dominate investor thinking.
The uncertain mood is hurting emerging markets and leaving many growth-focused assets on the back foot, with copper off 0.3 per cent to $3.35 a pound and Brent crude slipping 26 cents to $110.14 a barrel.

• Europe’s bourses are starting the week cautiously. The FTSE Eurofirst 300 is down 0.2 per cent after the Asia-Pacific region dipped 0.2 per cent. US index futures suggest the S&P 500 will fall 2 points to 1,654, leaving it 3.2 per cent below the record high hit at the start of the month.
Wall Street’s benchmark has pulled back as traders reduced bullish bets in the face of expectations theFed may begin tapering its programme of bond buying, possibly as soon as September.
Taper talk is only taking place because of evidence that the US economy is improving, but this healthier business environment is also helping to deliver a discomforting spike in interest rates as money moves out of bonds and yields are forced higher.
That is continuing on Monday, with the 10-year Treasury yield up 2 basis points to 2.84 per cent, near the most since July 2011. German and UK benchmarks are following suit, up 1bp apiece to 1.88 per cent and 2.71 per cent, respectively.
Currencies are not reacting much to the interest rate moves. The dollar index is flat at 81.3 as the euro eases just 7 pips to $1.3322.
Investors will look for further guidance on when tapering may begin when the minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s July meeting are published on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, one area of the market under particular pressure from the perceived shift in central bank largesse is emerging markets.
Recent fund flow data have shown investors reducing exposure to such asset blocs, attracted by the improving economic conditions in developed economies and the higher sovereign yields now on offer.
This trend is seen making it harder for some countries to fund current account deficits and has caused sharp slides in stocks and currencies.
The Indian rupee has hit another record trough versus the greenback and the Sensex index of stocks is following up Friday’s 4 per cent plunge with a 1.9 per cent loss to its lowest since mid-April. Investors continue to be rattled by the Indian central bank’s ineffectiveness at propping up the rupee.
Indonesia’s stock market is down 4.6 per cent, on course to close at its lowest since January having lost more than 15 per cent since its May peak. The rupiah has touched its weakest level in four years despite Bank Indonesia’s attempts of late to prop it up.
Elsewhere in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.8 per cent as the yen edged lower against the US dollar, dipping 10 pips to Y97.62. Tokyo’s reflationary policies are seen weakening the yen in an attempt to bolster the country’s exports.
Data on Monday showed Japanese exports rose 12.2 per cent year-on-year in July, accelerating from June’s 7.4 per cent growth. Imports also recorded an unexpectedly large jump of 19.6 per cent year-on-year.
“Currency rates continue to sway Japan stocks,” wrote Kazuhiro Miyake, analyst with Daiwa Securities. “We think the yen rate will remain key in gauging Japan’s future, including an end to deflation, economic recovery, and the stock market.”
In China, the Shanghai Composite is up 0.8 per cent, a much calmer session afterFriday’s tech-driven spike.
Gold is down $3, but at $1,373 an ounce sits only about $10 shy of its best level in two months.
