These anomalous concepts came about because of the less-than-critical
adoption by an earlier generation of foreign sources and
the concomitant prejudices against Filipinos those sources contain.
Historical accounts by foreigners, even the primary sources, should be used,
but Filipino historians must exercise critical thinking and promote a
pro-Filipino perspective that judges our culture and history in our own
terms. We must, therefore, re-examine and discard, if necessary,
colonial-minded concepts which have been integrated into our educational
system and have seeped into our way of thinking. I would like to cite at
least three examples.
