King Ramkhamhaeng or Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng was the third King of the Phra Ruang Dynasty, ruling the Sukhothai Kingdom from 1278 to 1298, when the kingdom was brought to the peak of its prosperity. The greatest achievement of King Ramkhamhaeng was the revision of various forms of Khmer alphabets into a system suitable for the writing of Thai words. The alphabet that he invented in 1283 was essentially the same as that in use today.
