To analyze economic viability of the biogas plants in Bangladesh six case studies are carried out in some
selected upazilasofgreaterSylhetdistrictinBangladeshwhereNGOslikeGrameenShakti(GS)andRural
Services Foundation(RSF)aredeliveringandservicingbiogasplants.Economicviabilityofthebiogas
plants aremeasuredbycomparingpriorexpenditure(beforeimplementingbiogasplant)for firewood,
kerosene, andotherconventionalsources.Economicviabilityreferstoanestimatorthatnotonlyseeksto
maximize theeffectivenessof financial viabilitybutalsoconsidersenvironmentalexternalities.Economic
viability forsixdifferentcasesofbiogasplantsprovidesinformationaboutrelativeperformanceofthe
product insixdifferentsituations.Asensitivityanalysisisperformedusingartificial neuralnetwork
(ANN) model.Althougheconomicviabilityofbiogasissensitivetokeroseneprice, firewoodavailability,
this studyrevealsthatbiogasiseconomicallymoreattractivewhenwomencouldrendertheirsaved
cooking timeforotherincomegeneratinggreenjobs.Biogasplantresultsanumberofincomegenerating
new greenemploymentsfortheruralcommunityinBangladesh.
