Simon was going crazy, torn between savagery and survival, life and death. The Lord of the Flies was the devil, and knew that talking to Simon would result in pain and death. Simon looked at the devil, and “his gaze was held by that ancient, inescapable recognition”, which shows Simon was falling to the darkness that was creeping over the boys (Golding 138). Simon’s insanity and confusion made it easier for the devil to speak to him and urge him to the dark side.
