These grim statistics support concern for the continuing effects of disparities on health in the
pediatric population. Given the negative trajectory and lack of improvement in meeting Healthy
People 2010 goals translational efforts to accelerate the results of scientific findings into
primary or community health is self-evident. Whether the recent NIH commitment [8] will
realize its potential to shorten the time gap of this adaptation process and facilitate meeting the
two Healthy People 2010 major goals for the USA to: 1) increase the quality and years of
healthy life; and (2) eliminate health disparities [9] - will be critical for nursing to monitor.
