The final major category of literature [figure 4.1] comprises materials at an early stage of development. Such early stage literature consists of studies posted to Web sites, papers presented at conferences, professional- association newsletters, drafts of studies available from authors, and student theses and dissertations. For example, electronic journals and research studies posted to Web sites and available online represent a growing source of research. This type of literature can be interesting because it is where new idea and results may first appear. Unfortunately, because this work is typically early in its development, it also means that reviewers (eg journal editors or book publishers) have probably not screened the work for quality. That is, materials found on Web sites are often not monitored to ensure their quality. Therefore, although this type of literature is easily accessible, you must be cautious of the conclusions until the results appear in more rigorous outlets, such as scholarly journals.
