6.6.20 The chicane sites investigated by Sayer et al. (1998), gave a reduction of 54 per cent in injury
accident frequency. Of the 17 schemes with accident
data, accident frequencies were reduced at 10
schemes, unchanged at 4 schemes and increased at 3 schemes. Accident severity was also reduced, from
18 per cent of accidents involving fatal or serious
injury before scheme installation, to 12 per cent after.
6.6.21 Accident data from MOLASSES (see
paragraph 2.2.5) showed that injury accidents at
chicanes or narrowings in urban areas had been
reduced, on average by 47 per cent (DETR, 2001b).
6.6.22 Although chicane schemes give an overall
reduction in the frequency of injury accidents, vehicles
are known to have collided with the kerb build-outs
at some chicanes, resulting in both damage-only and
injury accidents. Care should be given to the design,
signing, illumination and location of chicanes in order
to minimise these accidents (see Section 6.4).
