Cardiac malformations are detected in
approximately 3% to 5% of newborns, being
severe in one (01) out of every thirty-three
(33) births(1). Therefore, the neonatal period
for patients with congenital heart disease is
critical(2). This is the main cause of death in
early childhood in developed countries. In
Brazil, in 2008, it accounted for approximately
19% of the deaths of children under one year,
and was the second major cause of death in
this age group(1)
