Archaeological Ambon sherds were apparently made entirely within the
cluster of geographically associated islands including Ambon, Haruku ,and
Seram, although the presence of Moluccan pottery from farther afield ,as on
Serarn, cannot be excluded with the limited sampling of Ambon sherds
presently available in thin section. Sherds with apparent red slip preferentially
(though not exclusively) contain the exotic Serarn temper of heterogenous
melange-derived mineralogy, whereas dark sherds uniformly contain the
indigenous Haruku rhyolitic temper, which also occurs selectively in
reddened or slipped sherds.
